More on Starting Free Blogs

In my last post about how to create a blog I wrote about utilizing all of the MYSQL that come with most web hosting packages in an article called Adding Additional Blogs for Free. Today we will examine two additional ways to start free blogs. One of them is Blogger.com, the other is WordPress.com.

Blogger.com

Go to blogger.com.

blogger1.JPG

Either sign in (if you have a gmail account already) or sign up. After you have done this you should be at the Blogger dashboard. Here you can edit any existing Blogger blogs you have or create new ones.

blogger2.JPG

Go to Create a Blog

blogger3.JPG

Enter in a Blog Title (I used Blogging Newbie Advice). Now you need to select a blog address. This process can take a few tries because a lot of addresses are already taken (I used bloggingnewbieadvice). Type in the word verification and press continue.

blogger4.JPG

Choose a template and press Continue

blogger5.JPG

Your blog has been created! Press Start Blogging. You can also get to your blog by typing in the URL address: http://bloggingnewbieadvice.blogspot.com

blogger6.JPG

You can either jump right into a post or you can check your settings, layout, or view your blog. Play around with your new free blog. Write some posts and you are on your way.

WordPress.com

Go to WordPress.com

blogger7.JPG

You can either sign in or sign up. At this screen you can edit blogs you have already started or register another blog.

blogger8.JPG

Press register a blog or (another blog).

blogger9.JPG

Enter in a domain name, a blog title and press Create Blog. I chose Newbie Blogger Advice for the title and newbiebloggeradvice.wordpress.com for the domain name.

blogger10.JPG

Click on the link for your new blog or type it into your web browser.

blogger11.JPG

There it is! Under Meta press Site Admin

blogger12.JPG

At the WordPress dashboard click on Presentation and select a theme from those provided. I chose Blix. When you press on the theme you want you will see a preview.

blogger13.JPG

If you like the theme press on Activate in the top right corner of the preview.

blogger14.JPG

You are good to go. Add some posts (if you need some help with how the editor works read Using the WordPress Write Post and Write Page Editor), and have fun figuring out your new free blog.

blogger15.JPG

Until next time!

Adding Additional Blogs for Free

Once you have your blog up and running and while you are promoting your blog you may want to take a look at utilizing some or all of the MYSQL databases that are provided by your web host. At GoodNewsDomains (where I get my blog hosted) I got 25 MYSQL databases included when I signed up. It takes 1 MYSQL for a blog. What that means is that there are 24 more possibilities for future blogs at no additional cost. You are already paying for them. So in continuing to answer the How to Create a Blog question lets utilize another MYSQL and start another blog.

Starting a Blog for Free

For this blog I did a little keyword research. If you want some information on how to do your own keyword research read my article called Keywords, Keywords, Keywords. I am going to use the keywords “What is Blogging” for this blog. It gets searched for quite a bit and while there is some pretty good competition for the keywords I feel like I can get this blog up and over time get some traffic to it. This site has some Google Adsense potential because the keyword “What is Blogging” could bring some people who are new to blogging to the site. They are a lot more likely to actually click on the ads when they see something that interests them. People who are already blogging don’t usually click on the ads. Let’s get this party started. Log in to your hosting account and on the control panel click on Open

what11.JPG

what2.JPG

At the Hosting page press Settings

what3.JPG

Press Domain Management

what4.JPG

You are not adding a domain - you will be adding a sub domain. Press the Add button next to where you see Sub Domain

what5.JPG

In the space that has now shown up under Sub Domain type in the name of the site you want to start. I will type in “What is Blogging”

what6.JPG

Leave the path alone and press Save. You will see that the host is processing the information and then you will get a screen saying Pending Setup

what7.JPG

It can take a few minutes or more for the set up to be completed. Go ahead and log out of the hosting control manager for now. Once the sub domain is set up I will install WordPress and I will then have a site located at http://whatisblogging.mynewbieblog.com. While that URL is not one that people can easily remember or type in the idea is that I want them to find it by keyword searching and therefore the URL is not that important. If it become a problem later on I will by a domain name that matches the site and I will point it at that site. A domain name if I really need one will cost 10 dollars a year. I don’t think I will need one because I will try and drive traffic to the site through keywords. This site has the potential to be up and running with no additional cost to me. All the cost is absorbed in my main site - My Newbie Blog.

Let’s Install WordPress

You have probably installed WordPress on your main site already but let’s walk through the process with our new sub-domain. Go back to your hosting account manager. At the Settings-Database page you should see that your new sub domain is now set-up and that the path has also been established.what8.JPG

You want to look at the top of the page for the Value Applications button

what9.JPG

Press Value applications. If WordPress isn’t showing on the front page press show all application and scroll down until you find WordPress.

what10.JPG

Press on the WordPress logo

what111.JPG

Press Install Now. The manager will take a few seconds to process. It will then ask you which domain you want to use. You may only have one but if you have more pick the one that is the main one for your site. In my case I will choose MyNewbieBlog.com even though I will actually be installing WordPress into a sub domain

what12.JPG

You can see that at this moment I still have 24 MYSQL available. After this installation I will have 23. Choose your domain and press Continue

what13.JPG

Enter in your new directory name. I entered WhatIsBlogging and then enter in and verify a password (write it down). Press Next. At this screen you need to make sure you install WordPress into the sub domain and not the root directory. Select your recently created sub domain I chose whatisblogging

what14.JPG

Press Next

Enter in your admin name, password, email address and give your blog a title. Make sure you write down whatever admin name and password you use. As far as your Blog Title you can always change that later.

what15.JPG

Press Finish.

what16.JPG

It will now take up to an hour for WordPress to be installed. You will be notified by email when it is finished. Sometimes it only takes a couple of minutes. Congratulations, you now have a fully functional blog site and it won’t cost you a thing. Here is what What is Blogging looks like as I finish the article.

what17.JPG

When you finish reading the article go to the What is Blogging? blog and check out what the blog looks like now.

From Theme to Shining Theme

I wrote an article some time ago called Create a Blog You Can be Proud Of that demonstrated how to create a blog from scratch all the way to having a blank WordPress theme. This article will take you from that standard theme to one that includes the plugins, pages and posts you should have to get your blog going.  Follow the steps and you will soon have a blog that you will really enjoy.

It Starts with the Kubrick Theme

Under the Meta heading click on Login

birth2.JPG

Enter in your Username and Password. Welcome to WordPress!

birth3.JPG

At the WordPress Dashboard click on Options

birth4.JPG

Change the Blog title. Change the Tagline.

birth5.JPG

Press Update Options and then press View Site

birth6.JPG

You should see your new Blog title and your new tagline. Under Meta press login to go back to the WordPress Dashboard. Press Options and Privacy. Change the visibility of the blog so that everyone including search engines can see your blog.

birth7.JPG

Press Update Options. On the WordPress Dashboard go to Options and Writing. Look at the bottom of the page where it says Update Services. Make sure that the ping is set to http://rpc.pingomatic.com/

birth8.JPG

Press Update Options. At the WordPress Dashboard go to Options and Permalinks. Select Custom and enter /%postname%/

birth9.JPG
Press Update Permalink Structure. At this time you need to change your WordPress Theme. For a detailed explanation of how to do this read 50 Things to Do to Start a Blog From Scratch - Part 2.

birth10.JPG

Now That Your Theme is in Place

Go to the WordPress Dashboard - Users - Your Profile. Change the display name from admin to your name.

birth11.JPG
Press Update Profile. You need to add some pages to your site. Start with an About Page. If you need help adding a page read my article called Using the WordPress Write Post and Write Page Editor.

birth12.JPG

Now is a good time to write your first Post. Delete the Hello World post that came with the Kubrick WordPress theme.

birth13.JPG

Write your first post by describing what your blog will be about. While you are writing add your first category. At the end of the post include some tags (keywords for your post). After you publish this post you can go back and copy the text and paste it into your About page. Get your plugins installed.

Installing Plugins

WordPress Database Backup - I am listing this one first because I think it is one of the most important plugins you will install. It will automatically backup your blog every day and send you the backup in an email. You should do this!

WordPress Automatic Upgrade - Another important plugin. This one automatically upgrades your WordPress whenever there is a new release!

Akismet - This one comes with WordPress but you need to activate it and get an API key. Akismet is a spam blocker. For more information on how to install this one read my article titled Installing the Akismet Plugin. This is a good one to start with. It will help you get the idea of how to install a plugin.

All in One SEO Pack - This plugin is important for gettting your blog optimized for search engines.

Brian’s Threaded Comments - This gives you threaded comments and a wandering comment form.

Dagon Design Sitemap Generator - This plugin does all the work for your Sitmap page. It is an HTML sitemap, which means that people can see it. IT is different than the XML sitemap that you will create for Google. If you have questions about installing plugins you can read the article I wrote about installing this plugin titled More Progress on the 50 Things to DO to Start a Blog from Scratch.

FeedBurner/FeedSmith - This plugin detects all ways to access your original WordPress feeds and redirects them to your FeedBurner feed so you can track every possible subscriber. For more information onsetting up FeedBurner read my article titled Making Progress on the Starting a Blog from Scratch List.

Google XML Sitemap - This one is for the search engines. People on your site will never see it. The instructions will help you upload it to the search engines when you have it installed.

NoWWW - This is really a matter of preference. Do you want your site to be http://www.whatever or just http://whatever? If you install this plugin you will get rid of the www. You get this plugin at the WordPress Plugin Directory.

Sociable - Automatically add links to your posts to popular socail bookmarking sites. This plugin makes all links Nofollowed.

Related Posts - This one is good for SEO. It is a little tricky to install. Make sure you have a backup before you do it.

WP-Contact Form - This plugin is a drop in form for users to contact you. I go in to a lot of detail about installing this plugin in an article I wrote called 50 Things to Do to Start a Blog from Scratch - Part 3. If you read this article it will help you through the process of installing all kinds of plugins.

Add the Widgets

A good place to start is with the Text Widget you need for the Feedburner plugin. For more information read Making Progress on the Starting a Blog from Scratch List. Add a tag cloud widget. Tidy up your blogroll and your categories.

Finishing Touches

You should add a few more posts and a couple of categories. You should try and have at least five pages in place. Get Adsense set up. For information on getting your Adsense account working read Google Adsense. You may want to further monetize your site by setting up a Paypal Account to receive donations. Read How to Start Monetizing Your Blog. That should have your blog in a really good place. Now you need to focus on writing articles and promoting your blog!

Marketing Your Articles (Article Marketers)

Another important answer to the “How to Create a Blog” question is writing and marketing articles. When you market your articles properly you can get some good links to your blog. There are many directories where you can submit your articles. Here are a few examples:

Article City (articlecity.com)
Article Dashboard (articledashboard.com)
Article Directory (article-directory.net)
Ezine Articles (ezinearticles.com)
Go Articles (goarticles.com)
Idea Marketers (ideamarketers.com)
Internet Home Business Articles (internethomebusinessarticles.com)
Search Warp (searchwarp.com)

These sites are a good way to get your articles out into the world. The drawback is that it takes a lot of time to go through the process of submitting your articles. A faster way to accomplish the same thing is to use Article Marketer. This service will submit your articles for you. They offer a free service which has a partial distribution or you can pay a fee to take advantage of their full service. I pay for the full service because I feel like I can spend my time more wisely doing other things with the blog than hand submitting my articles to numerous directories.

Using Article Marketers

Go to the Article Marketers website.

am1.JPG

Take some time to read about the services the site offers and then go ahead and press Open Your Account. This option works if you are signing up for either the free service or one of the paid services.

am2.JPG

You will need to enter some basic information.

am3.JPG

You then need to decide which of the services you want to use.

am4.JPG

Once you have entered in all your information hit Next and you have an Article Marketers account.

am5.JPG

Login to the site with the User Name and Password you just set up. Now you can enter a article for submission to the directories. One word of advice; if you have already posted the article on your own site you should rewrite it before you submit it to the directories. Keep the main ideas but change the title and the headers, etc.

am6.JPG

You are going to type in the title of your article and then paste in the text of the article. The author boxes are where you get to add the text top get your link back. There are two author boxes, one that is a text box where you can enter the URL of your blog. The other box allows you to enter in your blog site URL and the URL of your post into the box.

am7.JPG

The HTML that I enter looks like this:

Stephen Lawes teaches people how to <a href=”http://mynewbieblog.com”>create a blog</a>. He shows them <ahref=”http://mynewbieblog.com/create-a-blog-you-can-be-proud-of/”>how to create a blog</a>, and how to begin to make money from it.

You then need to choose what categories to submit your articles.

am81.JPG

Enter in any special requests you have about when to submit the article and then click on the agreements and type in the spam code and hit Next.

am91.JPG

The Review Process

Once your article is submitted it first gets reviewed by a computer (since Article Marketers wants to send you article to as many possible directories there are some pretty specific guidelines they follow). If there are any issues that need to be resolved it will point them out to you. Fix any problems and save your update.

am10.JPG

The article is then reviewed by actual people. If they find problems you will have to fix them as well. Don’t get discouraged if you have to make numerous changes, it is making your article acceptable to the largest number of directories. The more sites that publish your article the more good back links you receive. Keep on writing and learning how to create a blog!!!

Getting Good Links

One of the questions that needs to be answered in How to Create a Blog is how to get traffic. Your blog is ultimately about traffic. If you write great articles and nobody reads them you are missing half the equation. In order to increase the traffic to your site you need to start getting some good links. We will look at 2 ways to get some good links, Blog Carnivals and Blogging Zoom.

Blog Carnivals

A great place to get started with blog carnivals is BlogCarnival.com. A blog carnival is a place where people submit their articles. The carnival links to your article and to your home page and you get two links. To get started go to BlogCarnival.com and get registered.

carnival1.JPG

Once you are registered and logged in you need to press Browse all carnivals.

carnival2.JPG

You will get the following list.

carnival3.JPG

Click on the arrow next to Next Edition to get the carnivals sorted by what’s coming next. You will see a list like this:

carnival4.JPG

Look through the categories to find one that matches your article. When you have found a good match click on it.

carnival5.JPG

Type in your permalink URL. You can see that mine was http://mynewbieblog.com/create-a-blog-you-can-be-proud-of/. Once you have entered in the permalink URL press Submit.

carnival6.JPG

You can check and see that the connections were made and then hit Submit again. You are now entered in a blog carnival.

Blogging Zoom

BloggingZoom.com is another good way to generate some traffic to your site. To get started go to BloggingZoom.com. Go ahead and get signed up.

zoom1.JPG

Once you are signed up and logged in click on Submit a New Post.

zoom2.JPG

Type in your original content URL (your permalink URL) and press Continue.

zoom31.JPG

Type in some tags for your article and then enter in a description of your article. This description needs to be at least 300 characters in length. If you try and submit it with less then a 300 character description it won’t be accepted. After you have typed in your description choose a suitable category for your article. Press Preview and Submit. Check out the information and then press Submit again.

zoom4.JPG

You are now in Blogging Zoom.

Read and Comment on Other Blogs

Part of being in the blogosphere is reading and commenting on other people’s blogs. This is one of those cases where you want to do unto others as you would have them do to you. Make some time in your schedule to participate in Blogging Zoom by reading the articles that are there and then Zooming the ones you like. The more often you do this, the more often your articles will be zoomed. You are off and running with your blog. Keep writing and submitting articles in order to generate more links and more traffic.

Newbies (noobs) are People, Too!

I will never forget the moment. Having struggled through getting a domain name and web hosting, wrestling to get WordPress installed and finally, there it was….my first blog! I sat staring at the strangely blue WordPress Kubric theme with the tagline saying “Just another WordPress weblog” and that haunting post blaring “Hello Word”! This for me was the quintessential newbie (noob) moment. The moment of extreme newbieness. What now????? How do I start a blog? How do I create a blog? Help!

newbie1.JPG

I scanned the page. “Welcome to WordPress”. That was nice. “This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start blogging!” What? Start blogging? How do I edit it? How do I delete it? Start blogging where? I continued to scan the page. What in the world is Meta? A blogroll? What have I gotten myself into? It was all questions and no answers and that for me defines what it feels like to be a newbie (noob). Maybe you have been blogging for so long that you can’t relate, but I bet a lot of you can. I still get those newbie moments sometimes. Those unexplainable moments when something that has always worked before suddenly doesn’t work.

Blogging Advice for Newbies

What did I do? I just started to plug away at it one step at a time. As I did I kept notes and took screen shots and turned the journey into My Newbie Blog (noob). I wrote an article called Create a Blog You Can be Proud Of (The Who, What, Why, Where, When and How of Starting a Blog) which details step by step the process of getting to that first newbie moment I described in the beginning of the story. Then I wrote articles about permalinks and categories, installing WordPress Themes, installing WordPress Plugins, writing in WordPress, Adsense, Keyword Searches, Monetizing, Site Stats, and more. These articles can function as a sort of WordPress tutorial as you attempt to answer that newbie question “How to Create a Blog“.
