Niche Sites

Developing a Niche Site - Part 6

In this series of articles on My Newbie Blog we are talking about developing niche sites.  We have started a group of niche sites about Laser Hair Removal.  We have said from the beginning that this is a very competitive niche.  You should only look at these as an example and then develop your own niche sites is less competitive areas.  Since it was the first day of the month I dd a search for our Miami Laser Hair Removal site.  I found it…way back on page 25 in position 244.  It has moved backward since the last time we checked on it.

This site has been on the Internet for a little over two months.  It could easily take another six months for this site to start moving up in the search engine results.  It might take even longer becasue of the competition.  What you need to know, is that not all sites take that long to get a decent return on the search engines.  If you do the upfront research and find a niche that isn’t so competitive, you can often get page 1 returns in a matter of weeks.  All you have to do is make your site more important to the search engines than the other sites that are being returned (more links, better content).  Remember, there is a bump to your site for fresh content.  If you are competing against sites that don’t have fresh content you can move in fromt of them pretty quickly.   We will keep slowly developing these sites and keep you informed!

Setting up the Advanced Category Excluder

There are times when you need to write a post on your blog just to keep some fresh content on the site for SEO purposes. If you get busy on other projects it may be hard to get to your blog and write the kind of article you need to write. One of the tricks you can use is something I do on My Newbie Blog from time to time when I need to get an article posted but just don’t have time to write a quality article on how to create a blog. Set up the Advanced-Category-Excluder plugin.

This handy little plugin lets you exclude categories from your home page, from your RSS feed, from your archives etc. so you can in effect write a post that is just between you and the search engines. Even when I do this I don’t write gibberish, I usually just write about what’s happening with the site and whatever else is on my mind in relation to the site. It’s not that it is bad or useless information, it just isn’t for the consumption of everyone.

This always works me past any writer’s block issues as I can just kind of free flow about what is happening without worrying about what people reading the article might be thinking. I make sure to include my keywords, again not in any ridiculous way, but just as they sort of flow out of my thoughts. This article would be an example of what I am talking about, although I will have to post this article in order to make the category active so that I can exclude it.

You can get the Advanced-Category-Plugin at the WordPress plugin repository. It is simple to install and very easy to use. I use it on all my niche sites as well so I can keep lots of fresh content on the site that it is not necessarily completely on topic. For example, when I am developing a site that I know no one is going to find for months, I will just write about the development of the site. That keeps me writing articles that pertain to the keywords. Once the site begins to show up on the search engines, I exclude that category and write the informational articles that need to be on the site. If you read this and get what I just said and realize how much time I just saved in you in research for a niche site that is months away from having any traffic, I am sure you will want to send me a virtual coffee. So sure in fact, I will put the cup on this post.

If this post was helpful, click on the coffee cup to buy me a virtual coffee.

Developing a Niche Site - Part 5

I wanted to write a little more today about developing Niche Sites.  Our test sites for this series of articles are Laser Hair Removal Sites.  I am focusing on one in particular called Miami Laser Hair Removal.  The site has been moving backward on the search engines, which is what I expected to happen.  I just found the site on page 23.

miamilaserhairemoval.JPG

It will probably move even further back for awhile.  This is the normal flow of things.  It takes time and links to move your site up in the search results.  There are some techniques people use to speed up the process by really working the social networks for links.  There is one program that is getting a lot of buzz right now called Bookmarking Demon.  If you are interested in finding out how the program works I am putting a link for you below.

My only caution is that if at some point in the future Google decides not to count those links it will have a significant impact on your site.  That may or may not happen but anything is possible.  You may want to try it with a few of your sites but not all of them.  I am currently playing with it on a few of my niche sites.

Don’t forget that these sites are in a very competitive niche.  If you are going to be successful with Niche sites you need to do your keyword research and find niches that have little or no competition. We will be talking more about how to create a blog in the weeks ahead.

Organizational Blog

If you decide that Niche Sites sound like an avenue of blogging business that intrigues you, staying organized will be very important.  One strategy for developing Niche sites is just sheer volume.  Even if your sites only make ten or twenty dollars a month, you can do well if you get 200 niche sites developed.  I know some people that develop 1 new site a week, and some that shoot for 4 or 5 a week!  Using the methods we are talking about it can be done for very little money.  It just takes time and you have to stay organized.  As you add sites and domain names, do keyword research, write articles, and build links you can get overwhelmed pretty quickly.  Some of the most common options for staying organized include keeping notepads, having a traditional filing system, or using spreadsheets.  I want to give you another option that I have developed for staying organized.  I call it the Organizational Blog.

The Organizational Blog

I developed a blog that is really just for me.  It is set up so that I can get to all of my sites from that one blog.  I also use it to pass blogroll links to some of the blogs I am developing.  I never want to miss an opportunity to build links.  I have some pages set up that are password protected where I work on sites that I don’t necessarily want people to see.  I have links to all of the tools that I think are important.  When I sit down to work I start by going to my organizational blog.  From there it reminds me of what I am working on, where I am on each project, what needs to be done when, etc.  To set up the blog I used free web hosting so it doesn’t cost me anything.  It might take a little extra time in the beginning to set up but it will pay huge dividends later.

I justify the time further by the blogroll links it provides.  I write short articles about the sites I am promoting and what I am doing to them.  I don’t promote the organizational site at all and I don’t think that anyone will ever read the articles (it would be fine if someone does and hopefully it would lead them to my main sites), but each article combines with those blogroll sites and builds links over time.  The organizational blog will easily add 50 links over the course of a year (probably closer to a hundred) to each site I add to my blogroll.  Considering it is work that I am already doing I think it is the best way take advantage of it.  As you consider how to create a blog you might just want to start an organizational blog of your own.

Developing a Niche Site - Part 4

We are going to take even more advantage of the free hosting we are getting from Good News Domains by utilizing the rest of the sub-domains available to us. We have the opportunity to use 10 MYSQL databases as part of the free hosting. We used one for Laser Hair Removal. We used one for Miami Laser Hair Removal. We are using the remaining 8 MYSQL databases to set up the folowing niche sites:

These 10 sites will constitute our Niche development. So far our only expense has been the $9.69 for the main domain name www.laserhairremovalpractice.com. Each of these sites are now gaining some age. Remember as you develop your niche sites, it will take time.

As a side note, the Miami Laser Hair removal site is holding its own on page 11:

The site will probably move backwards before it starts moving forward but it should eventually work it’s way up to a page 1 result. At least if we get the SEO right it will!

Developing a Niche Site - Part 3

It has been a few days since our last update on My Newbie Blog about Miami Laser Hair Removal.  The site is now returning a double result at the top of page 13.

We are still only pointing links from these articles at the site.  Our research on the topic continues and we will continue slowly working on the articles and link building.  If you rush the process the site will end up in the Google Sandbox.  Even if you take your time you might end up in the sandbox but it is nice to avoid if possible.   You have to think of a natural progression. A site would normally start and then slowly other sites would begin to link to it.  If you start a site and all of sudden it has hundreds of links Google knows there is something fishy going on.  So you add links slowly.  A link here, a couple of links there, then a few more, then 5 or 6, etc. so that over time you have a lot of links pointed at your site.  It will take months to do it properly.  There are some software packages available that will allow you to build hundreds of links virtually overnight.  This might work in the short term from time to time, but in the long term it is better to be patient.  Starting a blog for business is not a quick process, but it can be very successful.
