How to Create a Blog - Part 11
I was hoping to pass along a little Newbie Blog encouragement and a little wisdom to any of you newbies who find your way to this site or for those of you who have questions about how to create a blog. The wisdom is this, it takes a lot of time and work to get your blog developed and to the place where it starts generating traffic. If you are in a hurry or if you think that you are going to be making piles of money quickly, you need to think again. Any site that promises you easy quick money is not telling you the truth. It takes time, hard work, and some sort of strategy to make your blog a success. It is also likely that once you have been blogging for a while you will be changing and updating your strategy.
My encouragement is to stick with it. There are millions of blogs on the Internet that started with a flourish and then were just abandoned. If you can stick with it, over time your blog will start to have much better results. You will also begin to see opportunities to monetize your site over time. Adsesne is a good thing, but there are not many people who are really making a living with Adsense. There are some, but for most publishers it might eventually provide enough income to cover the cost of running a site. More people are making money by reselling and by offering some type of specialized service. Both of these options are easier to accomplish once your own blog is well established.
So, continue to blog and learn and don’t get discouraged. For most of you it will take at least a year before you start to see your blogs taking shape and generating any real measurable traffic. Take this time to write good content, develop links, and get a good keyword strategy. You may want to get a few more blogs on line to start acquiring age for projects in the future. Give it time and watch what happens.
SEO Case Study
As we talk about how to create a blog understanding SEO or search engine results is very important. To help illustrate some of the concepts I thought we would do a case study using one of the blogs we help called Evangelism Software. The Evangelism Software | Ministry Software blog has been on page 1 in position 1 or 2 for the last month as a Google return for the keywords “Evangelism Software”. That changed 2 days ago as a couple of new sites jumped ahead in the search results. Here are the search results as of today.
You can see that the site we are working with, Evangelism Software | Ministry Software has dropped down to position 5. Let’s look at the sites that jumped ahead on the results. The first site is shown below.
This site is set up with a couple of free program offers and Google Adsense in the heart of the page. This return is a page from a much larger site. The main site has a page rank of 6 and over 29000 links. That is a lot of links. There really isn’t much useful information on the site. It exists to display Google Adsense. Don’t get me wrong, the Adsesne program is a good thing, but it shouldn’t be the only reason a site exists.
The second site is another page from that same big site.
Again this page exists to get people to click on the Adsense ads. The third result is an actual site talking about evangelism.
Until a couple of days ago this site used to trade 1st and 2nd position with the site we work with. Showing up in position 4 we have
This return is kind of off topic but comes from a site with a lot of authority. The site we work with is now at position 5
This site provides some useful information about using free software to set up blogs for evangelism. You will notice that there is also Adsense on the site but it is not the sole purpose for the site. Evangelism Software has a lot of good things going for it to return a good result from Google. Working against it is that it hasn’t been around very long. This is all part of the deal with setting up blogs. It is possible that the sites that have just jumped into the top spots will move back down the page because they don’t offer much. In the meantime, Evangelism Software will have to make sure it keeps posting fresh content if it wants to move back up. The reality is, though, that even at the number one spot there is not much traffic for this keyword. For the month or so the site was ranked # 1 it only got 1 visit from the keyword search. I think that the sites that are just set up for Adsense clicks are going to be disappointed. My visit might be all they get.
From Theme to Shining Theme
I wrote an article some time ago called Create a Blog You Can be Proud Of that demonstrated how to create a blog from scratch all the way to having a blank WordPress theme. This article will take you from that standard theme to one that includes the plugins, pages and posts you should have to get your blog going. Follow the steps and you will soon have a blog that you will really enjoy.
It Starts with the Kubrick Theme
Under the Meta heading click on Login
Enter in your Username and Password. Welcome to WordPress!
At the WordPress Dashboard click on Options
Change the Blog title. Change the Tagline.
Press Update Options and then press View Site
You should see your new Blog title and your new tagline. Under Meta press login to go back to the WordPress Dashboard. Press Options and Privacy. Change the visibility of the blog so that everyone including search engines can see your blog.
Press Update Options. On the WordPress Dashboard go to Options and Writing. Look at the bottom of the page where it says Update Services. Make sure that the ping is set to http://rpc.pingomatic.com/
Press Update Options. At the WordPress Dashboard go to Options and Permalinks. Select Custom and enter /%postname%/
Press Update Permalink Structure. At this time you need to change your WordPress Theme. For a detailed explanation of how to do this read 50 Things to Do to Start a Blog From Scratch - Part 2.
Now That Your Theme is in Place
Go to the WordPress Dashboard - Users - Your Profile. Change the display name from admin to your name.
Press Update Profile. You need to add some pages to your site. Start with an About Page. If you need help adding a page read my article called Using the WordPress Write Post and Write Page Editor.
Now is a good time to write your first Post. Delete the Hello World post that came with the Kubrick WordPress theme.
Write your first post by describing what your blog will be about. While you are writing add your first category. At the end of the post include some tags (keywords for your post). After you publish this post you can go back and copy the text and paste it into your About page. Get your plugins installed.
Installing Plugins
WordPress Database Backup - I am listing this one first because I think it is one of the most important plugins you will install. It will automatically backup your blog every day and send you the backup in an email. You should do this!
WordPress Automatic Upgrade - Another important plugin. This one automatically upgrades your WordPress whenever there is a new release!
Akismet - This one comes with WordPress but you need to activate it and get an API key. Akismet is a spam blocker. For more information on how to install this one read my article titled Installing the Akismet Plugin. This is a good one to start with. It will help you get the idea of how to install a plugin.
All in One SEO Pack - This plugin is important for gettting your blog optimized for search engines.
Brian’s Threaded Comments - This gives you threaded comments and a wandering comment form.
Dagon Design Sitemap Generator - This plugin does all the work for your Sitmap page. It is an HTML sitemap, which means that people can see it. IT is different than the XML sitemap that you will create for Google. If you have questions about installing plugins you can read the article I wrote about installing this plugin titled More Progress on the 50 Things to DO to Start a Blog from Scratch.
FeedBurner/FeedSmith - This plugin detects all ways to access your original WordPress feeds and redirects them to your FeedBurner feed so you can track every possible subscriber. For more information onsetting up FeedBurner read my article titled Making Progress on the Starting a Blog from Scratch List.
Google XML Sitemap - This one is for the search engines. People on your site will never see it. The instructions will help you upload it to the search engines when you have it installed.
NoWWW - This is really a matter of preference. Do you want your site to be http://www.whatever or just http://whatever? If you install this plugin you will get rid of the www. You get this plugin at the WordPress Plugin Directory.
Sociable - Automatically add links to your posts to popular socail bookmarking sites. This plugin makes all links Nofollowed.
Related Posts - This one is good for SEO. It is a little tricky to install. Make sure you have a backup before you do it.
WP-Contact Form - This plugin is a drop in form for users to contact you. I go in to a lot of detail about installing this plugin in an article I wrote called 50 Things to Do to Start a Blog from Scratch - Part 3. If you read this article it will help you through the process of installing all kinds of plugins.
Add the Widgets
A good place to start is with the Text Widget you need for the Feedburner plugin. For more information read Making Progress on the Starting a Blog from Scratch List. Add a tag cloud widget. Tidy up your blogroll and your categories.
Finishing Touches
You should add a few more posts and a couple of categories. You should try and have at least five pages in place. Get Adsense set up. For information on getting your Adsense account working read Google Adsense. You may want to further monetize your site by setting up a Paypal Account to receive donations. Read How to Start Monetizing Your Blog. That should have your blog in a really good place. Now you need to focus on writing articles and promoting your blog!
Google Adsense
I have been working hard on the blog and while I realize I have a long way to go to get where I want to be I feel good about the progress so far. If you have been following along with your own blog you should feel pretty good by this point as well. I hope you are practicing your writing skills and working on some posts and not spending all your time just getting the mechanics of the blog down. The mechanics will eventually get done (there of course will always be changes but the big stuff will get finished) and then you need to write, write, write. The blog I have started from scratch is taking shape and so I am going to begin the Adsense process. One quick thing, if you don’t have a Google email address (Gmail) you might want to consider getting one. It’s free, works great, and will help keep all the stuff you do with Google in the future under one user name and password. Just go to Google and and sign up.
Signing up for Google Adsense
The first part of the process is to go to Google Adsense and join. You will see a screen that will say Join Adsense or Sign Up for Adsense:
Press the Join Adsense button and you should see:
Fill in the information and Google will ask you to check all your information again and then ask a couple of questions about how you will communicate. This is where it would be convenient to have a Gmail account already set up. When you answer the questions you will get this screen:
Now you have to wait for an email. It is going to take one or two days so you should probably work on something else for a while and then come back to this post after you have received your email from Google. See you in two days. Have fun! Be careful!
I got my email from Google, now what?
You need to go to Adsense Setup. Then go to Adsense for Content.
You will want to set up some Text ads so in the Ad unit window select Text ads only.
Choose what size you want for your blog. I like the 160 x 600 skyscraper.
You can also manipulate the color palette so that the ads match your site better. If there are no ads that fit well with your site you can choose to allow Public Service ads in those places, or you can choose to having nothing there and just fill the space with color.
You can choose channels to track the performance of the ad unit.
You can leave this blank as well and click continue.
Now you have a Adsense unit. Click on Submit and Get Code.
Highlight and copy this code. Go to the WordPress Dashboard, Presentations, and Widgets. Open up a text widget and paste in the adsense unit code. Wait for a few minutes and when you go to view your site you should see some Google ads! I want to encourage you to play with the different formats for ads. You are not allowed to edit the Adsense code, but they give you a lot of format options. Read the rules about how many ads you are allowed to have on your page. I think its important that you place the ads in a way that they don’t detract from your site. Go ahead. Take some time to experiment and have fun!
