Developing a Niche Site - Part 5

I wanted to write a little more today about developing Niche Sites.  Our test sites for this series of articles are Laser Hair Removal Sites.  I am focusing on one in particular called Miami Laser Hair Removal.  The site has been moving backward on the search engines, which is what I expected to happen.  I just found the site on page 23.

It will probably move even further back for awhile.  This is the normal flow of things.  It takes time and links to move your site up in the search results.  There are some techniques people use to speed up the process by really working the social networks for links.  There is one program that is getting a lot of buzz right now called Bookmarking Demon.  If you are interested in finding out how the program works I am putting a link for you below.

My only caution is that if at some point in the future Google decides not to count those links it will have a significant impact on your site.  That may or may not happen but anything is possible.  You may want to try it with a few of your sites but not all of them.  I am currently playing with it on a few of my niche sites.

Don’t forget that these sites are in a very competitive niche.  If you are going to be successful with Niche sites you need to do your keyword research and find niches that have little or no competition. We will be talking more about how to create a blog in the weeks ahead.

Developing a Niche Site - Introduction

Niche Sites are one way to start a blogging business. I thought that it would be a good exercise to demonstrate how to set up a niche site as a part of teaching how to create a blog. Starting a blog in a niche takes some research and thought. For this exercise we are going to start a blog called Miami Hair Laser Removal.

Miami Laser Hair Removal

Why Miami Laser Hair Removal? Good question. Interestingly, “laser hair removal” gets searched for quite a bit. According to the Wordtracker Site it gets searched for 1234 times a day. (I would take that number with a grain of salt. Since Google is really the only one who knows how many times something gets searched, and since they won’t tell us, we have to take best guesses. Wordtracker is real good at guessing, but it isn’t exact.) Google Adwords let’s me know that the going rate for advertising for “laser hair removal” is $8.15 for a click. If you could get a site in position 1 on page one for a Google search for “laser hair removal’ you could potentially make 1234 x 8.15/40 = $251.43 a day from Google Adsense. You won’t. For one thing there is a lot of competition for the keyword. Getting ranked would be a long slow task and when and if you finally got there it might not work out. I worked on a keyword that I thought was going to be golden, got it into the top spot on page 1, and it never got the traffic it was supposed to get. Sometimes that happens. So why go with Miami Laser Hair Removal? “Miami laser hair removal” gets searched for 33 times a day. Google Adwords says a click is worth $10.88. 33 x 10.88/40 = $8.97 a day from Google Adsense. If you can get on page 1 you could realistically make 4 or 5 dollars a day. There is a lot of competition for this keyword as well. I am going to use at a teaching exercise and you can get an idea of a how a niche site works. For your own niche sites you need to find good keywords, that have good Adsense value, and not much competition. “Miami Laser hair removal” or any “laser hair removal” keywords would not be a good choice for you. Do some keywords research, and you will find a good set of keywords to work with. I am actually going to develop 10 laser hair removal sites as research for an e-book I am writing for this site. I expect to invest about 4 hours per site or 40 hours for the string of sites, as part of my research for the book. At the very least I will be able to use the sites to get some link juice for my other sites. At best, I will be able to put them to use in other ways.

To get the project started I went to Good News Domains to find a domain name that would work for my project. After trying a lot of different options I settled on http://laserhairremovalpractice.com. My thinking was that I would develop all the sites as sub-domains of that main site. What this will let me do is set up all ten sites on one domain name. I am using the free hosting option on Good News Domains so that I can set up all the sites for free. My out of pocket expense for the project will be $ 9.69. The free hosting means I have to have some advertising at the top of the blog, but this is no problem in the beginning. If I need to upgrade to paid hosting I can do it later.

I installed WordPress on the LaserHairRemovalPractice site. Then I set up the first sub-domain as http://miami.laserhairremovalpractice.com. This will work really well with the Search Engines because I will have the keywords “miami laser hair removal” in the URL as well as in the blog title. I installed WordPress on the Miami Laser Hair Removal Site as well. I will learn something about the keywords when I post this article. If it shows up in the search engine results it will give me an idea of how competitive the keyword is. In the next article I will talk about installing some plug-ins and how to get things set-up so that bringing all 10 sites up together is as easy as possible.
